Here is a bluegrass fact. I'll try to get one out every day that I can. Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs were on eight episodes of The Beverly Hillbillies TV show. Their wives, however, were not their real ones. They were just actors.

Bluegrass fact: My profile picture, the one you see here, is not of me. It's of Earl Scruggs. Because he popularized his own style of banjo picking, he is the most imitated musician in the world.

Bluegrass fact: Lester Flatt, who is perhaps the most famous giutar player in the history of bluegrass, tried to learn the banjo as a child. But when he was 10, he didn't think he was good at it and gave up.

Bluegrass fact: Flatt and Scruggs bass player, Marty Stuart, realized that Flatt and Scruggs was something special. So, when Lester Flatt got his drivers' liscense renewed, Marty took his old one. And now it's very valuable!

Bluegrass fact: When Earl Scruggs formed the Earl Scruggs Revue, he played a strange new kind of music, kind of bluegrass, but a little more modern. As it turns out, it was a style of music called newgrass, but it wasn't given it's name until ten years later, when Sam Bush founded it.

Bluegrass fact: Flatt and Scruggs was the first bluegrass band to add a dobro, hiring Josh Graves to play it. The dobro is now a standard bluegrass instrument.

Bluegrass fact: Scruggs-style banjo picking is picking with three fingers. But, in fact, it wasn't invented by Earl Scruggs. His close friend and famous banjo player Snuffy Jenkins was the first banjoist to use this style of picking, but Earl Scruggs learned it from him. Because Earl Scruggs had much national recognition, he hugely popularized this style of picking. That's why it's called Scruggs-style.

Bluegrass fact: When Earl Scruggs was a boy, he entered a banjo picking contest. Close friend Snuffy Jenkins suggested that young Earl play "Cripple Creek", a favorite of the judges. Earl did, and he won the contest, I think.

Bluegrass fact: How is a banjo different from a guitar? A guitar has six strings, and when they are strummed openly do not make a chord. A banjo has five strings, and when strummed openly, makes a G chord. The guitar's strings from top to bottom are low E, A, D, G, B, and high E. The banjo's strings from top to bottom are high G, low D, low G, B, and high D.

Bluegrass fact: The dobro's real name is the resophonic guitar. John Dopyera created it in 1928 and sold it through the company he ran with his brothers: Dopyera Brothers Incorporated, or DoBro. His guitar was so popular that it took on the common name of dobro.

Bluegrass fact: Lester Flatt played the guitar a special unique way, with two finger picks and a particular strumming pattern. However, he did not teach his style to anyone. Although people have tried to play Flatt-style, no one has matched it. Flatt-style guitar picking is considered a lost art.

Bluegrass fact: Bill Monroe had a band with his brother, Charlie. When Bill created bleugrass, he and Charlie split up, although each continued to have his own band. I personally know the fiddler from Charlie Monroe's band.

Ever since Earl Scruggs started the Earl Scruggs Revue, he has used non-bluegrass instruments to put a new twist on his recordings. For example, on the album "Earl Scruggs: His Family and Friends", there is a 4-minute version of "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" which includes two banjos (Earl Scruggs and Steve Martin), two electric giutars, an acoustic guitar, a harmonica, piano, and an organ!

He lived in the Tennessee Hills as a boy, and every night, his entire family would sit on the front porch and play music. He'd learn one instrument well, and then he'd play another. It was really all there was to do. And now Roy Clark is forever famous.

Bluegrass fact: The dobro is a unique instrument. It uses three finger picks like the banjo, but instead of putting your fingers on the frets to play notes, you use a glass slider. And, most interestingly of all, the dobro is supposed to be played laying flat in your lap. Imagine how hard it is to play standing up!
