The Aim of the Game
The aim of Tractor Beams is to complete as many rounds as possible.
The more rounds you complete the higher your score.
Can you get to the top of our world-wide leaderboard?
The Combo Buttons
You complete a round when you have pressed all of the "combo buttons" in the combo panel:
The "combo buttons" are the round ones with names like "4 the same", "Any pair" or "3+ Timmy".
A "Red" button means you haven't used that combo yet.
A "Green" button means you can use that combo right now.
A "Grey" button means you've already used that combo.
Starting the Round
When a round starts 5 random characters from Shaun the Sheep will "beam" into play.
Our 5 random characters
In the picture above (from left to right) there are 3 Farmer characters, 1 Shaun and 1 Shirley.
(Not sure who all the characters are? Here is a handy guide!)
Using the "New Beam" button
Because we want the highest score possible, we want to see if we can do better than just getting 3 Farmers. So we're going to discard the "Shaun" and "Shirley" characters and swap them for new ones.
To do this click once on each character you want to replace. They will go dark to indicate you're going to get rid of them. It looks like this:
The 2 characters we're going to replace are dark
(If you make a mistake just click the character again to keep them - only dark characters are replaced)
Now click the "New Beam" button:
Two new characters will beam down to replace Shaun and Shirley:
Our 2 replacement characters
( Note: You can beam in new characters up to 2 times per go )
Yay! 2 Timmy characters have beamed in!
This is good because it makes the "2+3" combo button active for us:
The 2+3 Combo button is worth lots of points!
This is a difficult combo to get and is worth 100 points, so we click it.
Once you've clicked a Combo button
Providing that wasn't the last combo button, all of the characters will now be replaced with new ones, and your "Beams" counter will reset.
You then go through the same process again, only this time you cannot select the combo button previously used.
The key to winning the round is picking carefully which combos to use, and when (see Hints and Tips below)
How Scoring works
The characters are worth different points:
The Farmer - 1 point
The Naughty Pigs - 2 points
Shirley - 3 points
Timmy - 4 points
Bitzer - 5 points
Shaun - 6 points
So if you had 3 "Timmy" characters and click the "3+ Timmy" combo button you will get 12 points (3 x 4)
However for every EXTRA character you get 100 points each. So if you had 4 x Timmy characters and you clicked the "3+ Timmy" combo button then you'd get 112 points. If you had 5 Timmys you'd get 212 points. Remembering this is the key to really high scores.
Some combo buttons always give you the same points regardless of which characters you use to make them:
Any Combo - 25 points
Any Pair - 25 points
2+3 the Same - 100 points
None the Same - 150 points
4 the Same - 200 points
5 the Same - 300 points
When you finish a round your remaining score is added to your total. So it's in your interest to finish quickly!
Bonus Round
If you manage to reach 500 points in a single round then you will activate the "Bonus".
This means that even if you fail to get all of the combos out in the round then you will play another round regardless. That is what the Bonus does.
If you can get another 500 points on your next round the bonus will activate again. So it's a vital way to keep on going.
Keep Playing Until ...
You keep playing until there are no more "combo" buttons available for you to click, or you run out of time.
If you have not activated the "Bonus" then the game ends.
Hints and Tips
There is more to this game than pure luck of the draw! The following hints should help you:
1) Save the "Any Pair" and "Any Combo" buttons until the very end if you can. Use these as "wildcard" combos. For example the "Any Combo" button will always be active, because it literally means "any combination of characters" - so save it for when you desperately need it.
2) Sometimes it's worth a gamble - if you had already used your "Pigs" combo but you then roll 4 "pigs", sometimes it is worth trying to see if you can make it "5 pigs" just to get the "5 the same" combo out.
3) If you get 2 sets of 2 characters (for example you get 2 x Timmy and 2 x Shaun) then it's always worth replacing the 5th character to see if you can get the "2+3" combo - because it's a tricky one to get!
4) Try and get the lower combos out first and then work on the characters. It's quite easy to get the "3+" combos, but it's much harder to get the "4/5 the same" ones, so focus on those first.
5) Don't forget the "None the same" combo! If you have got an almost totally unique set of characters then try replacing the duplicates to try and get the "None the same" combo.
