Nah, if you get 500+ points, you get the "bonus." Then you keep playing until you have no combos left and then it says round complete. Then from that point, you need to get another 500 points (added to whatever points you have at that moment) to get the "bonus," and then you play until you have no combos left, and so on, and so on. The way to lose is to have no combos left before you get to the next 500 points you need.

narmanqua - there's a scoreboard at the end of the game. Make sure to click the end screen and you will be able to log you score

If you get 500 points you recive the bonus and after that you can get to the next level even if you don´t have any combos left. That´s the best tip I think..
