Shaun and his pals have been keeping the village of Slingsby, North Yorkshire, crow-free by becoming the winner in a recent scarecrow competition.
Every year around May Bank Holiday the village hold the competition to raise funds for the village school, charging £1 for visitors to follow the trail around over 30 entries from the townspeople. The competition has built quite a reputation, with people coming from up to 100 miles away to view the display and watch the maypole dance finale performed by local school children.
This year’s winner was created by Graham Smith, his wife Jennie and his two children, Murray and Olivia. They received over 100 votes for their papier-mache version of Shaun and his pals stacked in a tower.
"Shaun the sheep was inspired by my two children, Murray and Olivia, who love to watch the show when they get home from school." Says Graham "After doing a Google search on Shaun we printed a few pictures off to sort out what would be best. For my sins I suggested the picture if 4 stood on top of each other as I thought it would be great…but almost impossible to engineer!"
The final scarecrow consisted of chicken wire shapes stuffed with rolled up paper and about 10 layers of papier mache coating! Mod rock was used for some of the heads and features, ping pong balls for eyes, all taking over a month to create! The outer surfaces were then gloss painted in the correct colour to water proof. The team also tried to do their bit for the environment by using recycled materials where possible. The wool was made from a duvet lining, legs were made from black drainage pipe over canes and the feet were made of painted black yoghurt pots.
Disaster struck a week before the competition when the first "dress rehearsal" revealed that the sheep were too heavy and the stack collapsed! A major rethink was needed (and quickly!) and so the team headed off to their local DIY store and returned with cans of foam filler. Each body head and leg was filled with the stuff, allowed to set and rebuilt. This plan worked, although the team had to carry out running repairs throughout the weekend to stop the wind sweeping Shaun away! Luckily, Shaun managed to stay-put over the weekend and the competition was a great success.
Congratulations to Graham, Jennie, Murray and Olivia for their cracking creation!
